He was aboard the troopship HMS Otranto on the way to Britain when his vessel collided with HMS Kashmir during a severe storm near Islay, Inner Hebrides, Scotland. Buried at Kilchoman Cemetery, Islay. Re-interred at Queen's Cemetery, New York.
