Forde, Frank
Born John Francis, son of John and Margaret Forde nee Rourke. His father, born in Co. Galway, was a constable in the RIC and later an insurance agent. His mother was born in Co. Wexford. Later resided at Patrick Square, Wexford.
A clerical worker in the Pierce Ironworks Foundry in Wexford, Frank joined up aged 16. In early August 1916, he arrived in France and fought at the Battle of the Somme. However, just a few weeks before his 17th birthday, Frank was grievously wounded during the Battle of the Somme and died while being brought back from the trenches for medical attention. His platoon commander, Lieutenant A.W. Henchy wrote to Frank's parents and called him 'a fine courageous fellow and a gallant soldier of whom his family should be proud'. Frank was buried in Trachee de Mecknes Cemetary in the Pas de Calais in France. In his military will, he left everything he possessed to his mother.

Forster, Thomas Burton
Son of Capt. John Burton Forster, 1st Royal Irish Regiment, and Olive Edith Mary nee Sergent. Married Florence Elizabeth Johnston at Winnipeg, 24th March 1908 and they had a daughter, Florence Olive May Burton-Forster, born 13th April 1904. His will dated 18 January 1915 left everything to his wife at Vancouver. Applied for a commission 9 February 1915: rancher, address Melrose, Ash Valley, Surrey. His wife’s address was PO Box 123, White Earth, Minnesota, or Cathedral, 121 Cathedral Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
War Office telegram to Major-General Forster, Staff Corps, Commanding 57th West Lancashire Division, Canterbury, advised that his son was wounded 9th June and remained at duty, but was subsequently killed in action 10 June 1916. His widow re-married and was Mrs Gilmour, 646 Walker Avenue, Winnipeg, Canada. History of the Royal Irish Regiment: ‘When the battalion was in the trenches Lt. T.B. Forster and his scouts were out in front each night. On 10th they came under very heavy rifle and machine gun fire and Lt. Forster and three men were wounded. L/Sgt Michael Dreeling carried back L/Cpl Wright, then returned and carried in Lt. Forster and finally again went out under heavy fire to search for L/Cpl Walsh, who was missing and unfortunately could not be found. 2/Lt. Forster, a very promising young officer, died of his wounds shortly after he was carried in.’

On the 27th December 1917 when 12 miles NW from the Skerries, Anglesea, she was torpedoed by German submarine U-100 without warning and sunk. 24 lives lost. French, Robert James
Husband of Catherine French of Ballyell, Tagoat. On 31 May 1918, Snaefell sailed from Alexandria for Malta escorted by a sloop and two armed trawlers. On the evening of 3 June 1918 the Snaefell was struck amidships in the boiler space by a torpedo from the German submarine UB-105 (Wilhelm Marschall), 240 miles East-Southeast of Malta. The ship remained afloat for an hour before sinking, allowing time to rescue all. Three lives were lost in the torpedo explosion.
